Chief of Party for the Dominican Republic, SHOPS Plus

"This is definitely an important step towards the sustainability of the national response. And also a big step for the sustainability of the organizations."

SHOPS Plus chief of party for the Dominican Republic Nassim Díaz Casado talks about how the country has achieved a milestone in its journey to self-reliance and the sustainability of its HIV response.

The project worked with five nongovernmental organizations to reduce their reliance on donor funding by contracting with the national health insurance agency. The NGOs provide HIV, sexual and reproductive health, and other services to approximately 12,000 people per year. Three of the NGOs have already contracted with the insurance agency.

To help ensure sustainability of the country's HIV response, the project worked with the national insurance agency and other stakeholders to enroll people living with HIV in the Family Health Insurance, a prerequisite for obtaining coverage. Learn more.
