Webinar opening: Stewardship and the private sector
The webinar opened with Nelson Gitanga, SHOPS Plus's public-private partnership advisor from Insight Health Advisors. He set the stage by explaining that stewardship refers to the public sector’s systems, mechanisms, and ability to steer both public and private actors in the health system together to achieve a desired public health outcome.
Generating and using private sector data in Senegal
Marianne El-Khoury, SHOPS Plus research, monitoring and evaluation lead, presented on an example of stewardship from Senegal. It focused on the importance of gathering data and how information, and strong country ownership, paved the way for better stewardship.
Strengthening platforms for engagement in Tanzania
Nicole Kapesi, SHOPS Plus senior program officer in Tanzania, described activities that focused on family planning markets.
Amplifying private sector voice in India
Komal Khanna, the project’s chief of party in India, described amplifying the private sector voice through the Condom Alliance, a group of condom manufacturers who collaborated to expand the condom market.
The webinar concluded with a questions and answer section, with questions from the moderator and the audience.

Effective stewardship of the private sector is an essential element of a well-managed health system. It requires systems to sustainably generate and use high quality data on the private sector; well-functioning platforms for strategic public-private dialogue; and a strong, amplified private sector voice. This webinar will present lessons learned to improve stewardship and support public-private engagement in the health system.
